A pale, veiled oval sits low against a deep charcoal field, the white and grey layered thin enough in places that the black ground bleeds through, like an eclipse caught mid-motion rather than a finished, static shape. It's the highest-contrast piece in the Future Forward series, and the starkness gives it real graphic punch from across a room.
This piece holds its own against both light and dark walls, which makes it an unusually flexible choice for a study, entry, or gallery wall where the surrounding palette isn't fully settled yet.
Rebecca Koury is a contemporary painter based in Monterey, California, whose luminous, richly layered abstractions draw on the textures, colors, and rhythms of the natural world. She earned her BA from the University of Missouri, Kansas City and her MFA in sculpture, with a minor in art history, from the University of Texas at Austin. That sculptural training still shows in her paintings: she builds her canvases in dimensional layers of acrylic, metal leaf, and mixed media, working intuitively to create surfaces that read as both painted and constructed, letting structure and organic form hold each other in balance.
Koury's work is held in corporate and private collections across the country and abroad, including the Bellagio and Aria Resort in Las Vegas, the Ritz-Carlton Dubai, UCSF Medical Center, and the Waldorf Astoria Orlando, and she has shown in solo exhibitions at the Monterey Museum of Art and galleries throughout the Central Coast. She continues to paint from her studio in Monterey, drawing on patterns from fabric, ancient ruins, written language, and the shoreline just beyond her door.
