Incredible and quite rare antique 18th century example of German creamware. Although the term "rare" is often overused, it is likely fair in this case. This coffee pot likely dates from about the 1760's from the German principalities. During this time period, England and France were the gold standard for creamware production. England frequently hired artists to create designs that would be transferred onto the body of the piece. German artists, in an effort to capitalize on this popularity, painstakingly recreated similar designs with intricate hand painted details. Although generally considered inferior at the time the amount of work and skill put into the piece reflects far wore time and effort and results in a far scarcer product today. This piece features a carefully done landscape scene on one side and floral motifs on this others. Delicate black linework was done under the final glaze, helping to preserve the artwork for nearly 300 years and counting.
Condition: Good. The glaze, perhaps due to unstable formulation during the period, features heavy pitting. However, this pitting has largely left the painted surfaces unscathed. Additionally, it has no major cracks or chips and still has its original lid. For its age, it is wonderful that it has survived at all!
Please remember that all vintage and antique items have been used and loved and will show signs of wear and tear.
