A documented matched set of six French carved oak chairs in the Louis XIII hunting style, circa 1860, accompanied by the original 2001 Elke’s Antiques certificate and a 2006 appraisal.
The chairs feature tall inset upholstered backs surrounded by elaborate carved and pierced decoration, including grape clusters, broad leaves, scrolling vine forms, and floral motifs. Spiral or barley-twist stiles rise to turned finials, while the lower frames continue the design with carved block details, ball-and-block front legs, turned back legs, and barley-twist stretchers.
The inset backs and seats retain coordinating tapestry upholstery with gimp trim in cream, muted rose, green, blue, and neutral tones.
The original 2001 certificate from Elke’s Antiques, Ramstein-Miesenbach, Germany, identifies the set as “6 Stühle, Frankreich / Louis XIII Jagdstyl / um 1860. Eiche” — six chairs, France, Louis XIII hunting style, circa 1860, oak.
The set is also documented in a September 26, 2006 appraisal by The Specialists of the South, Inc. The appraisal describes the chairs as having ornately carved and pierced crests and sides, spiral or barley-twist stiles with finials, stretchers and back legs, ball-and-block front legs, inset upholstered backs and seats in tapestry with gimp trim, oak construction, and a circa-1860 date. It records a 44 3/4-inch center-back height and assigns the set a retail replacement value of $7,200 in 2006.
The set is offered for restoration. Three of the six chairs retain substantially intact carved crests. Three chairs have broken or detached upper carved crest sections; the corresponding original carved piece for each of those three chairs has been retained and is included with the set. The detached pieces are shown with their respective chairs in the listing photographs.
Despite the restoration needs, the six chairs remain a highly decorative and visually cohesive nineteenth-century matched set. The three intact examples provide clear references for restoration of the damaged crests.
Sold only as a set of six.

Three of the six chairs are substantially intact. Three chairs have broken/detached upper carved crest sections; the corresponding original carved piece for each damaged chair is retained and included with the set. Skilled woodworking/restoration will be required to properly repair and reattach these elements. Additional age-related wear includes minor carving losses, finish variation, surface marks, and evidence of prior repairs consistent with antique furniture of this age. Coordinating tapestry upholstery with gimp trim remains generally presentable. Offered as a matched restoration set and priced accordingly. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
