Antique-Style Brass Bouillotte Candlestick Lamp With Black Tole Shade
A handsome French Neoclassical-inspired brass bouillotte lamp combining the romance of candlelight with cleverly concealed electric illumination.
This distinctive brass table lamp takes its inspiration from the classic French bouillotte lamps developed for card and gaming tables during the late 18th and 19th centuries.
The lamp is centered by a finely detailed baluster-form brass standard rising from a broad dished circular base richly ornamented with repeating foliate and geometric decoration. Three scrolling candle arms surround the central standard, each terminating in a traditional candle cup and bobeche. The sculptural arms are particularly attractive, giving the lamp the appearance of an elegant three-light candelabrum.
Rather unusually, the candle arms remain decorative while two electric sockets are positioned beneath the shade, providing practical illumination without disturbing the historic candelabra appearance.
Above is a large black painted metal or tole shade, adjustable along the central standard and supported by a traditional three-arm shade frame. A decorative laurel-wreath ring finial completes the classical composition.
The combination of warm aged brass and dramatic black metal gives the lamp tremendous presence. It would be especially handsome on a library table, writing desk, console, sideboard or beside a traditional reading chair, while the sculptural form works equally well as an accent in a more contemporary interior.
