Design features
Slanted top A canted/sloping lectern-style top, designed to hold a Bible, dictionary, large book, or reference volume at a comfortable reading angle. The top is noticeably higher toward the rear and lower toward the front.
Storage shelves Two open storage shelves beneath the slanted reading surface provide space for additional books or reference materials. This makes it more functional than a simple Bible lectern.
Turned spindles If your particular example has turned vertical spindles, these are a traditional Colonial/Chippendale-inspired decorative element. The turned members visually break up the open shelving and give the stand the appearance of a small traditional bookcase rather than an ordinary modern lectern.
Mobility The stand is mounted on small casters, allowing it to be moved without lifting the relatively heavy cherry cabinet. The documented Brandt example specifically has brass casters.
Hardware style Brass hardware complements the warm cherry finish. Brass casters are particularly appropriate to the traditional furniture styling and contribute to the period Colonial/early-American appearance.
