The composition captures a fleet of period sailing vessels — gaff-rigged fishing and merchant craft with billowing brown, ochre, and deep green sails — locked in combat, with cannon smoke rising against a luminous, cloud-filled sky. In the foreground, choppy teal-green water carries small rowboats crowded with sailors, weathered mooring pilings, and gulls skimming the waves. The painting is rendered in the romantic marine tradition associated with 19th-century Dutch and Continental seascape painters, with rich atmospheric layering and confident brushwork in the water and rigging. Other S.D. Richelle paintings have been found in Europe and it is believed that this artist was likely French.

The painting is presented in a substantial carved giltwood frame with rococo-style scrollwork, acanthus leaf and shell motifs at the corners and centers, and a linen fillet liner. Frame size: 31.5" x 42.5"; sight/art size: 23.5" x 35.5".
