Authentic African Dogon Granary Door for your consideration. The door is a nice larger size, measuring approx. 13 inches wide, 19 inches tall and 1 1/2 inches deep. West-Africa, Mali, Dogon culture, late 19th to mid 20th Century. Hand carved and crafted, tribal wooden granary door, anthropomorphic motifs, featuring high-relief carvings of ancestral figures, symbolic breasts of fertility and stylized patterns. The carvings serve a spiritual purpose, representing ancestors and spirits meant to protect the millet stored inside the granary. Good vintage condition. Shows wear commensurate with age and use. Broken portion towards latch and decorative element towards the inside corner. Possible indicator that this door was broken into by a thief at some point to steal the precious millet inside.
