A striking vintage hand-crafted bar-height stool combining sculptural carved wood with hand-worked iron details. The unusual tripod form features a deeply curved saddle-style seat with dramatically upturned ends and distinctive pierced trefoil motifs.
Three tall, splayed wooden legs support the compact sculptural seat, while an aged iron footrest and iron collars encircle and connect the legs. The combination of dark, richly patinated wood and oxidized metal gives the stool a strong Primitive and Brutalist character.
Particularly noteworthy is the individually worked construction. Variations in the carving, joinery and surface, together with the forged-looking iron components, give the piece the character of artisan-made vernacular furniture rather than conventional mass-produced seating.
No maker’s mark, label or signature has been found. The maker and exact country of origin are unknown.
The stool retains a wonderfully aged surface with visible wood grain, rubbing, scratches, small losses, checking and age-related cracking, including cracking around portions of the pierced carved elements. The iron components exhibit oxidation, surface rust and an aged patina. These characteristics have been left intact and contribute to the piece’s distinctive time-worn appearance.
A highly unusual sculptural accent for a collected interior, equally compelling as bar-height seating or displayed as a piece of functional folk art.
