A pair of "olympia" wall sconces by mark brazier-jones, forged from iron with a copper sheet laurel garland and glass accents, holding a single candle. Signed on the reverse.
brazier-jones is a british designer known for a surrealist style often described as neoclassical or space-age baroque. As he puts it, form does follow function, but he treats decoration as part of that function, giving his work a flamboyance rarely seen in furniture design.
a founding member of london's creative salvage group in the 1980s alongside tom dixon and andré dubreuil, brazier-jones works in forged and welded metal, and his pieces are held in the permanent collections of the victoria and albert museum and the musée des arts décoratifs.
the olympia design draws on the imagery of ancient greece, a laurel garland encircling a glass dome that shields the flame, punctuated with cobalt and sky blue glass cabochons.
