The two-seater takes its name from the four large rectangular foam elements that form the seat and back, their gum-like shape giving the design its distinctive, sculptural profile. Newly upholstered in kvadrat "galaxy" fabric, a dark navy with a fine, irregular dot pattern that suits the piece's understated modernism. The foam elements remain dense and well-defined, and the underlying steel frame is heavy and entirely solid, giving the sofa real structural integrity. A herman miller badge is present to the underside. In very clean condition throughout, freshly upholstered and ready to place.
wilkes, a surrey-born designer, studied at the royal college of art in london, graduating in 1961 with the aid of an american travel scholarship, and it was through his subsequent work in new york alongside george nelson that he came to herman miller, where he went on to shape the firm's soft seating range with a particular focus on user comfort and need.
