This striking ceramic piece is an original "Southern Gothic Folk Pottery" mask titled "Ghost of Liberty's Past", handcrafted by Georgia-based outsider folk artist Joel Huff.
It is a one of a kind wood-fired stoneware ceramic mask featuring a textured brown and dripped blue/metallic ash glaze. The crown consists of a semi-circle of thirteen long steel machine bolts bursting from the forehead, mimicking a spiked crown similar to the Statue of Liberty
.The Eyes & Mouth: The eyes are entirely filled and blinded by clusters of shorter bolts and screws, while an open, gasping mouth features a long safety pin piercing the bottom lip.
Artistic Style and Context. Joel Huff operates out of Georgia and creates work that merges regional Southern traditions with distinct contemporary themes. His raw, intense facial features and mixed-media approach are hallmarks of his signature style. This specific mask highlights themes of binding, historical restriction, and the distortion of freedom, reflecting its haunting title.
