The … Read more A striking antique Peruvian Colonial School religious portrait, hand-painted on canvas and presented in an elaborate hand-carved giltwood frame.

The composition depicts a youthful haloed figure seated ceremonially and holding a large feather or quill-like attribute. The richly detailed costume features a red mantle, voluminous white sleeves and a dark blue-green garment embellished with intricate gold decoration. A radiating gilt halo dramatically frames the figure against the deep, atmospheric background.

The painting has the distinctive stylized features associated with Andean and Spanish Colonial devotional painting, including the frontal presentation, highly decorative textiles, vivid coloration and emphasis on gold ornament.

Of particular note is the substantial architectural frame. Deeply carved scrolling foliage, floral elements and pierced decoration surround the painting, retaining an aged gilt surface with darkened areas, rubbing and losses that give the piece considerable character.

The reverse reveals the traditional construction of both the canvas stretcher and carved wooden frame.

A wonderfully decorative piece with a strong Old World presence, particularly suited to Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, Baroque, ecclesiastical or collected interiors.
