Based on the visible grain structure, this trunk or chest's wood is old-growth pine. The bold, distinct, dark and light lines represent alternating growth rings (springwood and summerwood). This strong, dramatic contrast is highly characteristic of southern yellow pine. The rough, diagonal textures running across the green planks are rough-sawn mill marks. These show that the wood was cut using a large circular sawmill blade. Based on the visible hardware, construction, and paint style, this trunk dates to to 1870 - 1900. The heavily layered Olive or "carriage green" paints were heavily utilized during this timeframe for trunks to protect the raw pine underneath. Layout and construction confirms it is a blanket chest or storage chest rather than a travel trunk. It is a classic piece of American country furniture. This handmade piece features simple, flush wooden edges meant to sit stationary in a bedroom or workroom. The long, horizontal planks display prominent circular saw marks beneath the green paint. This indicates it was built during the peak era of small local sawmills supplying rural homesteads. Household blanket chests from this era were built for simple storage rather than security, which explains why it lacks heavy front locking hardware. The flat top makes it highly versatile for modern homes, frequently repurposed as a rustic coffee table, entryway bench, or end-of-bed storage. The layered, chipping green paint over the pine base provides a highly sought-after "shabby chic" or authentic farmhouse patina.
Wear to wood, wear to paint, but structurally very sturdy. Chains that hold the top open have been replaced at some point because they are newer. The chest has been sealed with historically correct shellac to keep the chipping paint in place so that it does not shed.
