This atmospheric mid-century work combines loose, gestural pen and ink drawing with painted passages in muted ochre, gray, gold, yellow and earthy tones. The abstracted landscape composition has a wonderfully spontaneous quality characteristic of California modernism of the period.

Signed and dated “Altfeld ’66” at the lower left. The artist’s name is additionally present on the reverse.

Altfeld was an established California artist and educator whose work encompassed watercolor, acrylic, ink, pastel, collage and other mixed media. He exhibited widely and served as president of the National Watercolor Society in 1972.

Presented under glass in a substantial and beautifully detailed period giltwood frame with deeply molded foliate ornamentation and an aged gold finish. The frame appears to be original to the artwork and complements the painting particularly well.

A wonderful small-scale original by a documented Malibu artist, dating to an especially appealing period of Southern California modernism.
