A distinctive two-piece Mid-Century Modern occasional table set featuring a square coffee table and coordinating architectural end table, thoughtfully refinished in our rich Old Chapel Tobacco Walnut™ finish and retaining their original dark chocolate-brown laminate surfaces.

What makes this set particularly compelling is the relationship between the two pieces. They clearly belong together through their shared materials, warm tobacco-walnut coloration, dark laminate tops, softly rounded details, and strong geometric vocabulary, yet each table has its own individual construction and silhouette. Rather than being scaled copies of one another, the two pieces complement each other as coordinating designs.

THE COFFEE TABLE

The larger table measures approximately 30” W × 30” D × 19” H, giving it an unusually handsome square footprint and a height only slightly lower than its companion end table.

Its broad 30” × 30” square top retains the original dark chocolate-brown laminate inset surface, surrounded by a substantial wood perimeter. The restrained dark top provides a beautiful visual counterpoint to the highly figured wood frame while also offering the durability and practicality for which these vintage laminate surfaces were originally selected.

Unlike the companion end table, the coffee table stands on four individual straight legs, creating a more open silhouette beneath the substantial square top. The softly rounded transitions and strong horizontal frame give it a restrained architectural quality characteristic of late Mid-Century and 1970s Modernist furniture.

THE END TABLE

The coordinating end table measures approximately 20” W × 20” D × 20” H, creating an almost perfect cube-like proportion.

Its most distinctive feature is its unusual original alternating frame construction. Two opposing sides form complete open square frames, with horizontal lower crossbars joining the legs near floor level. The other two opposing sides are completely open below their upper structural rails, with no lower crossbars.

There are exactly two lower crossbars total, positioned parallel to one another on opposite sides. This is an intentional element of the original design—not missing components—and creates wonderful negative space when the table is viewed from an angle.

The end table also retains its original dark chocolate-brown laminate surface. The laminate turns downward along the edge to create a dimensional dark lip above the separate tobacco-walnut wooden structural rail.

OLD CHAPEL TOBACCO WALNUT™

Both tables have been thoughtfully refinished in a rich Tobacco Walnut / deep coffee-walnut finish designed specifically to accentuate the natural wood grain rather than conceal it.

The wood throughout this set is wonderfully active. Pronounced grain lines, darker streaking, lighter brown passages, tonal movement, and natural differences between individual wood members remain visible throughout.

We intentionally allowed this variation to become part of the design.

Rather than covering the wood beneath an opaque painted finish or attempting to make vintage furniture appear newly manufactured, the restoration celebrates the inherent character of the original material. Against the quieter dark chocolate surfaces, the highly figured wood becomes one of the defining visual features of the set.

ORIGINAL DARK BROWN TOPS

Both pieces retain their original dark chocolate-brown laminate surfaces.

The laminate was intentionally preserved rather than replaced. Its smooth, understated appearance provides both material contrast and practical durability while maintaining an important element of the tables’ original Mid-Century design.

The combination of dark brown laminate + expressive tobacco-walnut wood grain gives the pair a particularly sophisticated, grounded palette that works beautifully in both vintage and contemporary interiors.

CHARACTER & RESTORATION

These are authentic vintage pieces that have been refinished while actively retaining character and imperfections associated with their age, materials, and original construction.

Natural wood variation, grain movement, darker and lighter areas, small marks, softened edges, minor irregularities, and other evidence of age have not been aggressively removed or concealed. These characteristics are considered part of the history and individuality of the pieces.

Both tables are solid, functional, and ready for use while retaining the warmth and authenticity expected of thoughtfully restored vintage furniture.

WHY WE LOVE THEM

There is something especially successful about these two pieces together.

The nearly equal heights—20” for the end table and 19” for the coffee table—create a strong visual relationship, while their dramatically different 20” and 30” square footprints establish hierarchy.

The coffee table provides the broad, grounded centerpiece. The smaller architectural cube table provides the sculptural accent.

Their differing leg designs keep the set from feeling overly matched, while the shared tobacco-walnut finish, dark laminate surfaces, square geometry, and rounded detailing clearly identify them as companion pieces.
