A striking example of mid-century modern design, this compact architectural end table pairs a richly grained wood frame with its original deep chocolate-brown laminate top. Measuring approximately 20” W × 20” D × 20” H, the table has an almost perfect cube-like profile, giving it a sculptural presence while remaining exceptionally versatile beside a sofa, lounge chair, or bed.

The solid wood frame has been carefully refinished in a rich tobacco-walnut / deep coffee finish, selected to celebrate rather than conceal the character of the original wood. Pronounced grain lines, darker streaking, warm brown undertones, and natural tonal variation remain beautifully visible throughout. The result is a highly dimensional finish with a warm, collected quality that contrasts beautifully against the quieter dark-brown top.

One of the most distinctive aspects of this table is its unusual original architectural construction. Rather than repeating the same framework on all four sides, the table was intentionally designed with two different pairs of opposing sides. Two opposite sides form complete open square frames, with substantial upper rails and lower horizontal crossbars joining the straight legs near floor level. The other two opposing sides have upper structural rails but no lower crossbars, leaving the space beneath completely open to the floor. There are exactly two lower crossbars on the table, positioned opposite and parallel to one another.

This alternating framed-and-open construction creates wonderful negative space and gives the piece a particularly graphic quality when viewed from an angle. It is an original design feature of the table and has been carefully preserved.

The tabletop retains its original dark chocolate-brown laminate, which remains an important part of the table’s character. Rather than replacing the original surface with wood, the laminate was retained both for its handsome material contrast and its practical durability. The laminate turns downward approximately one inch along the appropriate edges, creating a substantial dark vertical lip above the separate wooden structural apron. Narrow exposed wood elements at the perimeter and softly rounded outside corners further emphasize the table’s original construction.

The restrained laminate surface provides an especially attractive counterpoint to the highly active tobacco-walnut wood grain: smooth and understated above, richly figured and organic below.

The table has been refinished with an emphasis on preserving its original form, materials, and architectural character rather than attempting to make a vintage piece appear newly manufactured. Natural variation in the wood and evidence of its vintage construction contribute to its authenticity and individual character.

Its compact proportions make this an excellent choice for Mid-Century Modern, Organic Modern, Transitional, Contemporary, Modernist, and collected designer interiors. It has enough visual presence to function as a standalone accent table while remaining exceptionally easy to incorporate into a room.
