Circa 1970s Mid-Century Modern Tobacco Walnut Coffee Table
A handsome circa 1970s Mid-Century Modern coffee table distinguished by its substantial solid-wood construction, architectural square profile, expressive natural grain, and original dark russet inset top.
The table has been thoughtfully refinished in our Old Chapel Tobacco Walnut™, a deep, warm finish selected specifically to accentuate the remarkable movement and variation within the wood. Rather than creating a perfectly uniform surface, the restoration celebrates the table’s highly active grain, allowing darker figuring, warm tobacco undertones, and natural tonal variations to remain an important part of the design.
The substantial square frame features softly rounded edges, straight architectural legs, and a beautifully proportioned apron. The restrained geometry is quintessentially 1970s modern, while the warmth and character of the wood allow the piece to transition beautifully into Mid-Century Modern, Organic Modern, Transitional, and contemporary interiors.
At the center is the table’s original dark russet-brown inset performance surface, featuring subtle mottled tonal variation reminiscent of aged leather. This durable surface is original to the piece and provides an attractive, practical counterpoint to the richly figured surrounding wood. The original factory label identifies the inset as a laminated top, an intentionally durable furniture surface characteristic of the period.
CHARACTER & RESTORATION
This is a vintage piece whose history has intentionally not been erased. During refinishing, we chose to retain natural variations in the wood along with selected marks, small imperfections, and evidence of age and previous use. These characteristics give the table its individuality and contribute to the beautifully collected quality of the finished piece.
The resulting surface is smooth and finished for continued use, while retaining the honest character that distinguishes vintage furniture from newly manufactured reproductions.

WHY WE LOVE IT
This table succeeds because it doesn’t try too hard. Its clean architecture allows the wood itself to become the ornament. The dramatic grain, deep Tobacco Walnut coloration, and understated dark inset create a sophisticated combination of warmth and structure that feels equally appropriate in a 1970s-inspired room or a beautifully layered contemporary interior.
A coordinating architectural side table from the same collection is available separately, offering the opportunity to create a matched two-piece grouping.

The exposed wood has been thoughtfully refinished in our deep Old Chapel Tobacco Walnut™ finish, selected specifically to enhance and celebrate the table’s beautiful, highly active natural wood grain rather than obscure it. As part of the restoration, we intentionally retained the character and individuality of the original wood. Natural grain variations, tonal movement, small marks, minor surface irregularities, and age-related imperfections remain visible throughout and are consistent with the table’s vintage history. These characteristics are intentional elements of the finished piece and contribute to its warmth, depth, and one-of-a-kind character rather than presenting as a perfectly uniform newly manufactured surface. The table retains its original dark russet-brown inset performance surface, which provides a handsome contrast to the Tobacco Walnut wood frame. The original factory labeling identifies this inset as a laminated top. Vintage wear and minor imperfections consistent with age and previous use may be present. Please review all listing photographs as they form an important part of the condition description. A coordinating end table from the same collection is available separately in another listing. The two pieces may be purchased individually or paired as a coordinated Mid-Century Modern occasional-table set. less
