A striking limited-edition cast-bronze sculpture depicting an elongated female figure with her face dramatically lifted upward, enveloped in a sweeping, richly modeled shawl. The upturned head and broad, wing-like movement of the drapery lend the figure a powerful sense of yearning, resolve, and emotional intensity. The work is further distinguished by its expressive sculptural handling: deeply worked folds, faceted facial features, attenuated proportions, and an unusually animated surface that reveals the artist’s hand from every angle.
The figure’s slender vertical form is balanced by the broad, almost wing-like movement of the drapery across her upper body. Viewed in profile, the sculpture becomes remarkably narrow and architectural; from the front and back, the fabric creates a sense of movement and emotional intensity. The nuanced brown patina is enriched by naturally occurring green-blue highlights that settle into the modeled recesses, emphasizing the texture and depth of the casting.
Very heavy for its size and unquestionably cast in bronze, the sculpture has the substance and surface complexity associated with a serious studio work rather than a mass-produced decorative object. It is signed indistinctly and numbered 7/21, indicating a notably small edition of only 21 castings. Mounted on a polished circular black stone base, likely granite.
An accomplished and compelling example of late-20th-century figurative modernism with Expressionist and Brutalist qualities. Particularly effective displayed where it can be viewed in the round.
Artist presently unidentified.
Dimensions: 6ʺ W × 5ʺ D × 13.5ʺ H.
