The upturned head and broad, wing-like movement of the drapery lend the figure a powerful sense of yearning, resolve, and emotional intensity. The work is further distinguished by its expressive sculptural handling: deeply worked folds, faceted facial features, attenuated proportions, and an unusually animated surface that reveals the artist’s hand from every angle.
