Pair of vintage American Brutalist sculptures depicting elongated male and female figures. Dating to the 1980s, each is constructed from slender welded steel rods arranged vertically to create deeply ridged surfaces with expressive irregularities and visible points of welding.
The dramatically attenuated proportions, simplified anatomy and solitary stance are distinctly Giacometti style, while the exposed construction and raw industrial material give the figures a strong American Brutalist character. A dark reddish-brown patinated finish accentuates the texture of the steel and lends the pair a rich, almost bronze-like appearance.
Although conceived as a complementary pair, the figures are individually modeled. The taller figure has broader shoulders and a more angular torso, while the shorter figure has a narrower upper body and subtly articulated hips. Each stands independently on its original substantial square steel block base.
Unusual in their scale and particularly compelling together, these sculptures bring height and graphic presence to a console, pedestal, credenza or substantial bookshelf without requiring a large footprint.
Unsigned. Identical documented examples have been identified as American and dating to the 1980s.

The irregular welds, textured surfaces and tonal variations are inherent to the fabrication and Brutalist character of the sculptures. Both figures stand securely on their original steel bases. less
