A wonderfully evocative circa 1915 oil painting on board, capturing the excitement and pageantry of an early 20th-century English horse race. The lively composition depicts a group of jockeys and their mounts charging onto the course, with the leading horse and rider prominently positioned in the foreground. Behind them, additional riders crest the grassy rise while an animated crowd of spectators gathers along the rail, creating a convincing sense of movement, anticipation, and sporting atmosphere.
The artist has rendered the scene with particular attention to the colorful racing silks, richly toned horses, and period-dressed spectators. A red flag flying above the course and the distinctive grandstand or viewing structure at left further establish the setting, while the broad, softly painted sky allows the action below to command attention. The painting is signed “G. Harrison” at the lower left.
Dating to approximately 1915, the painting is executed in oil on board and remains an attractive example of early 20th-century British sporting art. Overall measurements are approximately 18.5 inches wide, 11.5 inches high, and 1 inch deep.Especially appealing is the painting's original-period presentation. It is housed in an ornate gold-toned gesso frame with finely molded classical decoration, complementing the warm Edwardian-era palette and lending the work a handsome, substantial appearance. There is an artist signature in lower left corner. Good antique condition with a few losses to the gesso frame, light age-related wear to painting surface. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
The combination of equestrian subject matter, sporting history, and decorative period framing makes this an excellent choice for an English Country interior, traditional library, study, sporting collection, or gallery wall.
