Late victorian belgian blue & white faience oil lamp, circa 1880–1900
a beautiful late victorian blue and white faience oil lamp, dating from circa 1880–1900 and later professionally converted for electric use. Richly hand decorated in the traditional delft style, this elegant lamp combines the enduring appeal of nineteenth-century craftsmanship with modern practicality, making it a timeless addition to both period and contemporary interiors.
the graceful baluster-shaped ceramic font is decorated in cobalt blue upon a crisp white glazed ground, featuring intricate floral sprays, scrolling foliage and stylised decorative borders. Inspired by the celebrated delft tradition, the hand-painted decoration reflects the popularity of blue and white faience produced throughout the low countries during the nineteenth century, when these ceramics were admired for both their beauty and practicality.
originally intended for oil illumination, the ceramic reservoir would once have been fitted with a brass burner and glass chimney. As electricity became commonplace during the early twentieth century, many quality oil lamps were sympathetically converted, allowing them to continue their original purpose whilst preserving their decorative character. This example retains its attractive engraved brass gallery, decorative collar and elegant cast brass paw feet, all of which complement the beautifully painted ceramic body.
the crisp blue and white decoration contrasts beautifully with the warm patina of the brass mounts, creating a sophisticated lamp that works effortlessly within country houses, georgian and victorian homes, coastal interiors and more contemporary settings. Whether displayed on a console table, bedside cabinet, library desk or sideboard, it provides both ambient lighting and enduring decorative appeal.
the lamp has been fully rewired using quality british electrical components and pat inspected to current uk standards, ensuring it is ready for immediate use.

the lamp has been photographed with our medium empire lampshade – ecru with stucco, handmade in the united kingdom exclusively for shackleton fox. This lampshade is available to purchase separately and has been carefully selected to complement the proportions and character of the lamp.
history
blue and white faience has been admired across europe for centuries, inspired by the highly prized porcelain imported from china during the seventeenth century. The famous delft potteries of the netherlands established a distinctive decorative style that was widely emulated by ceramic manufacturers throughout belgium, france and other parts of europe. Characterised by hand-painted cobalt blue decoration upon a white glazed ground, these wares became synonymous with refined craftsmanship and timeless elegance.
by the late nineteenth century, decorative ceramic oil lamps had become an important feature of fashionable interiors, combining practical illumination with artistic design. Following the widespread introduction of electricity during the twentieth century, many well-made examples were professionally converted, allowing these beautifully crafted lamps to remain functional whilst preserving their historic charm.
craftsmanship
the ceramic body has been hand decorated using traditional cobalt blue underglaze decoration before being glazed and kiln fired to produce its durable glossy finish. The carefully painted floral ornament, scrolling foliage and decorative borders demonstrate the skill of the artisan and the enduring influence of the delft ceramic tradition.
the engraved brass gallery, decorative collar and cast brass paw feet have been thoughtfully incorporated into the design, creating an elegant balance between ceramic craftsmanship and fine metalwork. The later electrical conversion has been sympathetically undertaken, allowing the lamp to continue serving as both a functional light source and a decorative antique.
