Founded in 1894, elektriska ab chr. Bergh co. Was one of sweden’s pioneering electrical engineering companies. Beyond producing lighting fixtures, the company manufactured local power stations, electrical equipment, installation materials, vulcanized cables, incandescent lamps, and a wide range of electrical components that played an important role in sweden’s electrification during the early twentieth century.
the company was reorganized in 1925 and became part of the asea group in 1930. Under asea’s ownership, lighting products continued to be marketed under both the chr. Bergh & co. And asea names, with identical models appearing in parallel catalogues until 1943. That same year, the company was officially renamed cebe, derived from the initials of chr. Bergh. In 1947, all lighting production was consolidated under the asea belysning division, preserving the design legacy and manufacturing expertise established by chr. Bergh & co.
this table lamp is documented in the 1941 chr. Bergh & co. Catalogue and represents the company’s mature functionalist period. The design exemplifies the scandinavian philosophy of combining technical innovation with restrained elegance. Its gracefully curved tubular frame, hemispherical metal shade, and sculptural circular base create a balanced composition that is both highly functional and visually refined.
today, catalogue-documented lamps by chr. Bergh & co. And cebe are increasingly sought after by collectors and interior designers for their historical importance, exceptional craftsmanship, and enduring place within swedish functionalist and scandinavian modern design.
