Together with his brother, Einar Bäckström, he founded Einar Bäckströms Metallvarufabrik in Malmö around 1918. Both brothers were trained metal chasers, mastering the traditional craft of shaping and decorating bronze and brass by hand. The company quickly became known for its exceptional craftsmanship and high-quality lighting, mirrors, decorative objects and sculptural bronze works.

While Einar oversaw the company and its production, Sune Bäckström became particularly associated with the artistic design of the firm’s bronze objects. His work perfectly captures the elegance of the Swedish Grace movement, combining restrained classical proportions with refined Art Deco influences. Jardinieres, vases, mirrors and candleholders designed by Sune are today among the most sought-after creations from the firm’s early production and are considered rare on the international market.
