This Swedish textile wall hanging from the 1960s is a distinctive example of the strong tradition of textile art that developed in Scandinavia during the mid-20th century.
The period saw textiles move beyond their purely functional role to become an important element of modern interiors. Woven and textile wall hangings were frequently used alongside Scandinavian modern furniture, ceramics, lighting and natural materials, bringing warmth, texture and artistic expression into otherwise restrained architectural spaces.
This piece has a highly decorative and tactile character, with its woven surface giving the composition a sense of depth that changes subtly depending on the surrounding light. The combination of texture, pattern and craftsmanship gives it a distinctly Scandinavian presence while allowing it to function equally well as a work of textile art.
Its generous visual character makes it particularly suitable as a focal point above a console, sofa or sideboard, but it could also work beautifully in a contemporary gallery-style interior where the texture of the textile can contrast against clean architectural surfaces.
A decorative and atmospheric example of Swedish mid-century textile design, combining traditional craftsmanship with the modernist approach to materials and interiors that characterized Scandinavian design during the post-war period.
Sweden, circa 1960s.
