This period, marked by rising Arab nationalism and German archaeological ambitions, positioned him amid politically charged digs, including the Parthian site at Khujut Rabu. Blood poisoning forced his return to Vienna in February 1939, just before World War II engulfed Europe; he published *Im verlorenen Paradies: Neun Jahre Irak* in 1940, chronicling his tenure amid wartime constraints.
