c. 1910s; Rex Collar by United Shirt and Collar - Troy, NY
Reverse-painted advertising mirrored sign promoting Rex detachable collars. It features a figure in a blue suit with binoculars and a bold orange-and-white graphic design. Text reads "See Yourself at Your Best in a Rex Collar - 2 for 25¢." The face of the figure is a mirror so a person can see themselves in the reflection, an advertising psychological principle knon as 'self-referencing' where a potential customer can see themselves in the product being sold.
United Shirt and Collar was among several American collar makers competing in the early 1900s in the Troy, New York area. United Shirt's most famous of collars were Lion, and their competator, Cluett, Peabody & Company - also in Troy, was responsible for the Arrow line of collars popularized by Teddy Roosevelt.
