Tall studio easel in wood with iron fittings and an adjustable sliding clamp for large-format canvases. Standing over seven feet in height, the frame is layered with decades of pigment, bearing testimony to its long history of active use.
The easel remained in continuous service across two generations, belonging to a family of professional artists and academics in Illinois. The first owner, born in 1905, used it as a working easel for life-sized portraiture; it later passed to his son, a professor of art history at Northern Illinois University, who continued the tradition of working with live nude models throughout his long career.
