Some furniture speaks through ornament; other pieces rely entirely on craftsmanship. This coffee table, most likely designed by Giuseppe Rivadossi, demonstrates an approach in which construction becomes decoration. Carved from solid oak and assembled with exceptional attention to joinery, it reflects the philosophy of one of Italy's most accomplished master woodworkers.
Crafted from solid oak, the table is defined by its bold architectural form and exceptional woodworking. The substantial square legs support a broad frame surrounding two recessed glass panels, introducing transparency into the otherwise monumental composition. Rather than disguising the construction, the intricate interlocking joints are proudly displayed, becoming an integral part of the design. Contrasting end-grain geometric details at each corner celebrate the cabinetmaker's skill and create a subtle decorative rhythm without distracting from the purity of the form.
The two glass inserts allow light to pass through the centre of the table, softening the visual weight of the oak while exposing the carefully constructed framework beneath. A secondary stretcher reinforces the structure and adds another horizontal layer that changes appearance depending on the viewing angle. The warm honey-coloured oak, now enriched by decades of natural ageing, lends depth and character to the sculptural silhouette.
Giuseppe Rivadossi devoted his career to elevating traditional Italian woodworking techniques into contemporary furniture. His work is recognised for its expressive joinery, sculptural use of solid timber and deep respect for the natural qualities of wood. Rather than disguising structural connections, Rivadossi transformed them into the visual identity of each piece, creating furniture that balances functionality with craftsmanship.
with its sculptural proportions, refined construction and restrained use of glass, this table embodies the enduring appeal of Italian studio craftsmanship. It serves equally well as a centrepiece in a contemporary interior or amongst a carefully assembled collection of twentieth-century collectible design.
The table is in very good vintage condition with light wear consistent with age and use. The oak has developed a beautiful natural patina, and both recessed glass panels remain well preserved with only minor signs of use. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
