This exceptional pair of wall lights, model 2030/31, was designed by Rolf Krüger and Dieter Witte for the German lighting manufacturer Staff. Dating from the 1960s, the design perfectly embodies the fusion of functional lighting design with the clear, sculptural forms of German mid-century design.
The pair offered here is in excellent condition. The dark brown metal shades and white-painted reflectors are very well-maintained and accentuate the clean lines of the design. The lamps show hardly any signs of use and are in near-mint condition. Both lights bear the original Staff label with the model designation 2030/31, clearly documenting their provenance.
Characteristic of the model is its consistently minimalist construction of bent metal. A white-painted base is enclosed by a dark brown, slightly curved metal shade. The shade extends far forward, completely concealing the light source and thus preventing direct glare. At the same time, the light is reflected off the white inner surface and emitted both upwards and downwards. This creates a pleasantly indirect yet architecturally striking illumination. This interplay of shielding and reflection is one of the distinctive design qualities of the 2030/31 model.
Staff Lighting was one of the leading German manufacturers of modern lighting, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s. The company collaborated with numerous renowned designers; in addition to Rolf Krüger and Dieter Witte, the company's historical product line includes designs by Motoko Ishii and, later, Kazuo Motozawa. The experimental use of metal, glass, and innovative lighting concepts made Staff a characteristic representative of progressive German lighting design during this era.
