Pair of Austrian Baroque Limewood Putti / Cherubs, 18th Century
A striking and highly decorative pair of 18th-century Austrian Baroque putti, beautifully sculpted in limewood with expressive faces, rounded forms, and animated poses that embody the theatricality and movement of the Baroque period.
Expertly hand-carved, these charming cherubs would originally have formed part of a larger ecclesiastical or architectural decorative scheme, most likely adorning an altar, retable, tabernacle, or church interior. Retaining remnants of their original polychrome decoration, the figures offer a fascinating glimpse into the richly painted appearance they would once have possessed. Centuries of age and handling have mellowed the surface, creating a wonderful patina that highlights both the quality of the carving and the warmth of the limewood beneath.
Displaying the expressive modelling and sculptural character associated with Austrian and South German church carving of the 18th century, the putti possess tremendous charm and presence. Their lively expressions and dynamic forms suggest they once interacted with a larger decorative composition, perhaps supporting drapery, clouds, cartouches, or religious ornament within a grand Baroque setting.
Presented on bespoke oak plinths, the figures have been mounted as sculptural objects in their own right, allowing them to be appreciated today as decorative works of art. Their strong visual impact makes them equally suited to traditional, classical, or contemporary interiors.
An evocative and highly decorative pair of Austrian Baroque putti, offering remarkable craftsmanship, historical interest, and timeless decorative appeal.

Condition
Condition is consistent with age and historical use. Both figures have lost their original arms over time, a common occurrence with architectural carvings of this nature. One cherub displays a natural age-related split to the reverse, while the other shows evidence of historic woodworm activity. Both figures have been professionally treated and are stable for display. The surviving traces of original polychrome decoration add greatly to their authenticity, character, and decorative appeal.
Age-related wear throughout, losses to both original arms, historic woodworm to one figure (treated), natural age-related split to the reverse of one figure, with remnants of original paint and surface decoration throughout.
