Thor Fagerkvist (1884–1960) was a distinguished Swedish painter, illustrator, and draftsman whose career spanned the first half of the twentieth century. Closely associated with the artistic life of Värmland, he developed a deeply personal visual language rooted in the Nordic landscape, combining expressive brushwork with a poetic sensitivity to atmosphere and emotion. While his early work reveals influences from Nordic Symbolism and the expressive tradition of Norwegian painting, his mature style evolved into a lyrical form of Swedish Expressionism, where mood and memory became as important as the landscape itself.
Beyond his achievements as a painter, Fagerkvist gained national recognition as an illustrator. In 1943, he was commissioned by Albert Bonniers Förlag to illustrate Onda sagor by Nobel Prize-winning author Pär Lagerkvist, one of Sweden’s most celebrated literary figures. This collaboration reflects the esteem in which Fagerkvist’s artistic vision was held and highlights his ability to translate literary themes into powerful visual imagery.
His works are represented in several important Swedish museum collections, including Moderna Museet, and he remains an appreciated figure within twentieth-century Swedish art. Following his death in 1960, memorial exhibitions further acknowledged his contribution to Swedish painting and illustration.
This painting, “Avskedet” (“The Farewell”), embodies the qualities that define Fagerkvist’s mature oeuvre. Rather than depicting a landscape as a purely topographical record, he transforms nature into an emotional narrative. Soft transitions of light, expressive brushwork, and a restrained yet evocative palette create a profound sense of silence, reflection, and human presence. The title, inscribed a tergo on the reverse, reinforces the painting’s emotional resonance, inviting the viewer to interpret the scene as both a landscape and a meditation on departure, memory, and the passage of time.
Executed in oil on canvas, Avskedet is a compelling example of Swedish Expressionism from the first half of the twentieth century, combining painterly sensitivity with the timeless atmosphere that has made Thor Fagerkvist’s work increasingly appreciated by collectors of Scandinavian art.
