The piece is crafted with … Read more A monumental 19th century European mortar basin crafted from a single block of Carrara marble. The piece is crafted with a drum form body and a deep circular well with large lug projections on each corner. The piece sits atop a broad stepped circular base. The exterior shows both smooth worked surfaces and raw unfinished pick-tooled marble, typical for hand-quarried European marble pieces of the period. The interior bowl carries an authentically darkened umber gray patina built up from long periods of use. Crafted on an impressive scale with substantial weight, the piece was likely used as a mortar, sink, or cistern in a European farmhouse or mill setting. The versatile piece is now functional as an architectural planter or jardiniere, center piece for a dining table, or as an outdoor garden accent piece.
