An exceptionally decorative antique Chinese console table, dating to approximately the late Qing Dynasty / early Republic period, circa 1890–1920.
The table is constructed in wood and finished in deep black lacquer, richly embellished with hand-painted gilt and polychrome decoration. Elaborate scrolling botanical motifs extend across the top, apron and supports, with stylized flowers rendered in muted red, green and gold against the black ground.
Particularly striking is the table’s architectural silhouette. The long rectangular top is framed by layered decorative borders and supported by an extensively pierced and carved apron composed of dramatic scrolling forms. The supports terminate in boldly curled feet, giving the relatively slender console an unusually sculptural presence.
The decoration rewards closer inspection. Fine gilt linework delineates individual leaves, flowers and scrolling foliate forms, while broader passages of gold ornament create a layered contrast against the black lacquer. Red underlayers visible naturally along worn edges and carved details add considerable depth and character to the surface.
Perhaps most compelling is the beautifully aged lacquer itself. Across the top, the black surface has developed a fine network of natural craquelure consistent with the aging of a traditional layered finish. Elsewhere, generations of wear have exposed portions of the underlying red and gold-colored layers, particularly around the feet, carved edges and projecting elements. Rather than diminishing the piece, this accumulated patina gives the table the visual complexity and character associated with genuinely aged decorative furniture.
The underside retains a contrasting deep red finish, while the construction and irregularities visible throughout the carved elements further reflect its hand-worked character.
At nearly five feet long yet only 15.5 inches deep, the table has particularly useful proportions. It provides substantial visual presence without projecting far into a room, making it especially well suited as an entry console, behind a sofa, beneath a large mirror or artwork, or as a dramatic focal piece in a living room, library or dining room.
A distinctive example of Chinese decorative furniture combining lacquer work, hand-painted polychrome ornament, gilding and elaborate pierced carving in a single sculptural composition.
