Late 19th / Early 20th Century French Country Solid Wood Trestle Console Table
Rich with architectural detail and authentic character, this substantial solid wood trestle table evokes the relaxed elegance of a centuries-old French country interior. Its unusually narrow proportions make it especially well suited as a console, hall, serving, or library table, while its sculptural base gives the piece considerable presence.
The table measures approximately 48 inches wide × 23 inches deep × 27 inches high, with a substantial molded decorative edge measuring approximately 1 inch wide around the perimeter of the top.
The base is particularly beautiful, constructed with paired turned supports at each end, deeply shaped and hand-worked trestle feet, and a long turned central stretcher. Four small decorative turned finial-like elements—two along each long side of the apron—add another distinctive architectural detail and speak to the table's individual history and construction.
Constructed of solid wood throughout, the table retains the wonderful irregularities associated with an older, traditionally constructed piece. Rather than attempting to make the table appear newly manufactured, we intentionally retained the visible texture and character of its hand-worked elements, variations in the wood, historic joinery, old seams, checking, surface irregularities, and imperfections within the tabletop.
The table has been refreshed in a sophisticated deep black finish with restrained hand-applied gilded accents, emphasizing the molded perimeter, turned supports, stretcher, and sculptural lines of the trestle feet. The finish was designed to complement rather than conceal the table's age: subtle variations beneath the surface and evidence of its long history remain visible and are considered integral to the character of the piece.
The underside similarly reveals traditional solid-wood construction and evidence of later reinforcement added during the table's lifetime. These elements have been retained as part of its history and provide additional structural stability.
The table is very solid, stable, and ready for use. Its age-related imperfections, historic wood movement, joinery, tool texture, and surface character have intentionally not been erased. These qualities distinguish the piece from a newly manufactured reproduction and give it the depth and individuality that only an older piece of furniture can acquire over time.
Equally at home in a French Country, European Farmhouse, Old World, Traditional, or collected designer interior, this wonderfully sculptural table can serve beautifully as an entry console, hall table, library table, sofa table, or distinctive serving table.

The table is structurally solid, stable, and ready for use. This is an older, traditionally constructed solid-wood piece, and its natural imperfections are considered an important part of its character rather than defects to be concealed. During refinishing, we intentionally chose not to over-restore or artificially perfect the table. Evidence of its construction, age, use, and historic wood movement remains visible throughout. The solid-wood tabletop retains numerous natural and age-related characteristics, including variations in the wood grain and texture, old marks, scratches, shallow indentations, small separations, checking, seams, irregularities, and other surface imperfections acquired during its lifetime. The tabletop is not intended to present as a perfectly smooth, newly manufactured surface. The hand-worked and shaped elements of the base similarly retain variations in carving, shaping, tool texture, joinery, and symmetry. These subtle irregularities are particularly evident around the sculptural trestle feet, turned supports, stretcher, apron, and decorative elements and contribute significantly to the table's individual character. Historic joints and connections remain visible in areas. Small openings, old fastener locations, seams, minor gaps, checking, and evidence of previous construction or restoration may be present. The underside retains extensive evidence of traditional solid-wood construction as well as later reinforcement and stabilization undertaken during the table's lifetime. These later structural elements have been retained and contribute to the table's present solidity and stability. Four small decorative turned elements are present along the apron—two on each long side. These elements sit over historic openings in the apron and have been retained as part of the table's existing character and history. The table has been refinished in deep black with hand-applied gilded detailing. The new finish was intentionally applied in a manner that preserves rather than fills or disguises the underlying texture, age, construction characteristics, and imperfections of the wood. Expect visible evidence of age throughout, including: • Natural variations and irregularities in the solid wood • Historic scratches, marks, dents, and surface impressions • Checking and minor age-related separations • Visible seams and variations at joints • Irregularities associated with hand-worked and shaped wood • Historic fastener and construction evidence • Old openings and previous attachment points • Areas of historic wood movement • Variations in the surface and tabletop • Evidence of later underside reinforcement and stabilization • Subtle variations within the newly applied black and hand-gilded finish These characteristics have intentionally been retained and should be considered part of the table's authentic antique character. They distinguish this piece from newly manufactured furniture and contribute to its wonderfully individual, time-earned appearance. Despite its numerous visible signs of age and historic construction, the table presents beautifully and is very solid, stable, and ready for continued use. DIMENSIONS: 48" W × 23" D × 27" H Decorative molded edge: approximately 1" wide around the perimeter. less
