Historical context: Coffee tables of this type were a standard feature in middle-class living rooms during the 1930s and 1940s. They stood in front of seating groups consisting of sofas and armchairs and served as a surface for drinks, newspapers, and smoking accessories. Furniture production during this period combined handcrafted construction with an increasingly functional design, reduced to basic forms, as this table also demonstrates. Features: Tabletop with diagonally laid, diamond-shaped oak grain. Tapered cross base with flared, profiled footrests. Design: Formally, the table stands between the later Art Deco design language and the functional design of the 1940s. The design is minimalist: a circular top with a profiled edge, beneath which sits a geometrically clear, downward-tapering, cross-shaped base. Ornamentation is entirely absent; the effect arises from the proportions and the wood grain. Formerly used as a sofa and side table in the living room seating area, today it serves as a versatile side table, coffee table, or standalone piece in the living room, hallway, or entryway.
