A british design classic the 1227 anglepoise table lamp, designed by george carwardine in 1932.
george carwardine was a british automotive engineer who owned a factory developing vehicle suspension systems. The factory proved to be an incubator for creativity, and carwardine liked to tinker and experiment with the vast array of industrial bric- a-brac at his fingertips, especially the springs. It was while pottering like this that he designed a new type of spring with ‘constant tension’ that could be moved in every direction, yet remain rigid when held in position – rather like an arm.
he patented his unique spring design in 1932, then applied it to a lamp, licensing the product to herbert terry & sons, who already supplied springs to his factory. Originally, he named the now iconic lamp the equipoise, but this was rejected by the trade marks registry, so he decided upon anglepoise.
used in great british institutions such as the bbc & ministry of defence. The lamp during world war 2 was made with a battery pack to be used in bomber planes. According to the anglepoise website, these were so well produced that when a crashed vickers wellington bomber was salvaged from loch ness in scotland in 1985, the lamp still worked after being given a new battery – despite being submerged for around four decades.
this version the 1227 anglepoise table lamp was made between 1935 & 1968 by the company herbert terry & sons.
expertly restored, polished, rewired & pat safety tested ready to go. This lamp uses a b22 bayonet fitting bulb. This lamp is supplied with a b22 bayonet led light bulb.
