The inlaid round top above the hexagonal, tapered central column and the ebonized tripod base creates a clearly proportioned and aesthetically cohesive overall impression. Historical Context: Round pedestal tables – known as guéridons in French – were a standard feature of bourgeois salons in the 19th century. They served as freestanding tables for conversation, tea, and entertaining, and were accordingly elaborately designed. In the second half of the century, French workshops increasingly employed inlay techniques and ebonized surfaces; the contrast between polished veneer and black-painted sections was a common design element of the period. Features: Central star-shaped inlay of contrasting woods, complemented by a continuous filet band and diamond motifs on the tabletop. Hexagonal, obelisk-shaped central column on an ebonized base with three curved legs. Napoleon III design with a transition to Historicism. The design is based on the contrast between the highly polished, inlaid tabletop and the black-painted base. The obelisk-shaped column and the clearly curved legs give the table a calm, upright appearance; the ornamentation remains concentrated on the surface of the tabletop. Dimensions: Height 77 cm, Diameter 86 cm. Material and condition: Probably walnut, veneered, with inlays of various contrasting woods; column partially, base, and legs are ebonized. High-gloss finish. Very good, restored, and well-maintained condition with age-related wear; a crack in the tabletop has been professionally repaired. Professionally inspected and refurbished by Kastellan, structurally checked, stable and functional. See less
