The antique paintings category presents a refined oil on canvas painting depicting an elegant interior scene in historical costume, animated
by finely dressed figures, captured in an intimate and theatrical narrative moment, rich in emotion and dramatic tension, 19th century.
The antique artwork portrays a richly decorated aristocratic interior, where Conti’s focus lies in the meticulous rendering of details, from the
luxurious fabrics of period clothing to the furnishings, enhanced by a masterful modulation of light that highlights the figures.
The antique oil painting bears a label on the reverse with the title “The Departure”, a recurring subject in 19th-century genre painting, interpreted
with delicacy and psychological sensitivity, suggesting a silent narrative conveyed through glances, gestures and posture.
Italian figurative painting of the 19th century.
The artwork is dated 1879 and signed lower left Tito Conti, an Italian painter active in the artistic panorama of 19th-century Italy.
Tito Conti (1842-1924) was born in Florence and is regarded as one of the leading representatives of Italian genre and costume painting,
renowned for his elegant figure scenes and historically inspired portraits.
He began his studies at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts in 1855, training in academic techniques and history painting.
He made his public debut in 1861 at the First National Exhibition in Florence with a historical painting dedicated to Christopher Columbus.
He later became a resident professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, influencing an entire generation of artists.
Among his most notable pupils was Arturo Ricci, another Florentine genre painter.
The painting is housed in a fine gilded frame, enhancing its historical and decorative character.
Both the frame and the oil painting have been carefully and professionally restored.
The painting was re-lined many years ago, probably in the mid-twentieth century.
