An exceptional, monumental French wardrobe from the Napoleon III era (second half of the 19th century, c. 1860–1875), combining features of luxurious eclecticism and Neo-Baroque styles. The piece originates from a Parisian workshop, evidenced by the original factory mark on the back of the mirror—"SUPERIEUR DEPOSE"—guaranteeing the highest artisanal quality of the period glass pane.
Key features and specifications:
Dimensions: height 265 cm, width 170 cm, depth 63 cm (at widest points); ideal for a townhouse, loft, manor house, or high-ceilinged drawing room.
An absolute masterpiece of 19th-century premium cabinetmaking.
The use of solid oak for the back panel, structural elements, drawer bottoms, and the wardrobe floor is a hallmark of furniture made exclusively to order for the wealthiest social classes (aristocracy or the wealthy bourgeoisie). In standard furniture from 1860–1875, hidden (or "blind") components were typically made of cheap pine or spruce. The combination of oak for the interior and flame mahogany for the exterior represents the finest material pairing of that era.
Virtually indestructible: Oak is one of the hardest European woods, highly resistant to pests and moisture. Consequently, the back panel and drawer bottoms have not warped over more than 150 years and remain in perfect condition. Craftsmanship and prestige: Working with hard oak required significantly more effort and superior tools from the cabinetmaker than working with soft pine. This testifies to the fact that the workshop responsible for its creation represented the highest level of
cabinetmaking artistry: The fronts and structural elements are clad in spectacular, select pyramid (flame) mahogany veneer, featuring an incredible, deep grain pattern.
Condition following cleaning (removal of dust and grime without compromising the wood structure): The piece has been fully cleaned and treated with wood oil. The oiling process brilliantly brought out the natural contrast and three-dimensional quality of the mahogany’s "flame" figure. The wardrobe is clean and ready for immediate use.
Rich woodcarving: The top of the wardrobe is adorned with a massive crown featuring a hand-carved Neo-Baroque cartouche, along with acanthus leaf and flower bud motifs.
