It is thought to date from around 1880 to 1940, spanning the Meiji to early Showa periods, and was used as a work surface supporting daily labor in farmhouses and ordinary homes of the time. The material is believed to be pine or cedar, a coniferous wood known for its relatively light weight.

The board is constructed by joining three separate planks into a single surface — a technique known as "sanmai-hagi," or three-plank joinery — giving it a rustic yet somehow dignified presence. Its surface is layered with countless cuts and fine scratches, marks left behind by work that must have been repeated again and again. These layered traces quietly speak of accumulated time, much like the rings within a tree.

Old work boards like this often turn either deep, sooty black from years of use, or pale and bleached from repeated washing. This board stands apart from both of those paths, having settled instead into a gentle, warm brown tone.
