Decorative reproduction of a detailed 1779 map of Ireland, handsomely presented in a dark wood frame with layered cream and brown matting.
The map is titled Map of Ireland with the Roads from the Latest Survey’s and is attributed within the image to Thomas Kitchin, the noted 18th-century English cartographer and engraver. It was originally engraved for William Guthrie’s New Geographical Grammar and depicts Ireland divided into its historic provinces and counties, with an extensive network of roads, towns, coastal features and waterways.
Fine cartographic details include sailing ships in the surrounding seas, a compass rose, mileage scales and an elaborate decorative title cartouche. Muted reds, greens and ochres highlight the provinces while retaining the appearance of an early hand-colored map.
This later reproduction by O’Brien Printing of Dublin has been custom framed with layered cream and brown matting in a dark molded wood frame, giving the historic cartography a handsome, traditional presentation well suited to a library, study, office, or collected gallery wall.
