A fine & large antique French Art Deco bronze of a Native American scout or brave, by René-André Varnier, circa 1920.
This very fine and dynamic antique patinated bronze sculpture depicts a Native American brave or scout crawling low to the ground through long grass, his bow hangs to the left side, he looks alert scanning the horizon.
The bronze has a deep rich patina with gilded highlights to the brave's headdress and the tall grasses below, the bronze is signed to the rear "R. Varnier".
The bronze is in excellent antique condition, it is large in size at two feet in length, this fine bronze sculpture is ready to grace your space.
Artist Bio
René-André Varnier was a French sculptor, he was active at the height of the French Art Deco period, he was born in the late 19th century and was active until the 1930s.
He is celebrated for creating elegant, patinated bronze and mixed-metal figures that quintessentially embody the stylized geometric energy and romanticism of the Art Deco movement.
Varnier's portfolio is heavily defined by the classic motifs of the interwar era, his work covered three main categories: He frequently sculpted elegant, dynamic figurative subjects, such as his naked female Dancer figures holding golden spheres, classical gladiators, and romantic couples. A substantial portion of his work includes animal sculptures, showcasing precise anatomical lines; panthers, leopards, pheasants, and Alsatian dogs. He also sculpted allegorical subjects such as Diana the Hunter.
