Antique Eastern European Floral Painted Pine Wood Marriage Chest/Marriage Box (Dated 1869)
Origin: Eastern or Central Europe, marriage chests are often associated with Hungarian or Saxon tribes.
Design: Traditionally decorated with vivid folk art, including floral motifs like tulips as with this piece, which is a symbol of fertility and prosperity. Painted on a dark blue background, and dated by artist 1869. Set on decorative feet, and in good, clean, antique condition.
Original Use: Originally used to store a bride's trousseau - household linens, garments & valuables. They were built sturdy enough to double as benches or seats along with functioning as a storage chest/trunk.
