Curtis's best-known portraits, originally photographed in 1903. This example was produced in 1975 by photographer and preservationist Jean Anthony du Lac as part of The Curtis Project. Du Lac created a photographic print from a negative derived from the original copperplate gravure, exactly as described on the authentication stamp on the reverse.

Du Lac devoted years to preserving Curtis's work through carefully made reproductions of both the famous Orotone portraits and copperplate gravures. His reproductions were respected for their quality, with examples displayed at the Smithsonian Institution and in the White House during the Carter and Reagan administrations.

The portrait depicts a leader of the Zuni, one of the Pueblo peoples of western New Mexico. The Zuni have lived in the region for centuries and are known for their rich artistic traditions, agriculture, ceremonial life, and enduring cultural heritage. Curtis's portraits of Zuni men and women are among the most recognizable images from his early Southwest expeditions.
The reverse retains the original Curtis Project stamp reading:

"This Edward S. Curtis image was photographically printed by Jean Anthony du Lac from a negative derived from the copperplate gravure."
