This is an exceptional vintage silkscreen serigraph print of Josef Albers' iconic artwork, Study for Homage to the Square, originally created in 1954. This official edition was published in 1998 by Editions Acte III in Belgium. The piece beautifully showcases the German-American artist’s legendary Bauhaus-rooted geometric configuration and hard-edge abstraction style.
Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a monumental 20th-century modernist who served as a core faculty member at the legendary Bauhaus school before emigrating to the United States. As the head of design at Yale University, he became one of the most influential art educators in American history, shaping generations of artists. His revolutionary theories on color and perception served as a vital conceptual bridge between European modernism and emerging movements like Minimalism and Op-Art.
The Homage to the Square project stands as the definitive culmination of Albers’ entire life’s work, which he pursued continuously for over 25 years. By keeping the formal composition strictly limited to nested squares, he removed all narrative distraction to focus entirely on how colors interact visually. This specific 1954 design masterfully demonstrates his core principle that colors are entirely relative, visually shifting and changing character based solely on their proximity to one another.
