c. 1890s-1900s;
Tin over card trade sign advertising Garland Shirts and their patented "cushion split neck bands." Gold gilt lettering and decorative border stand in sharp relief against a frosted background, accompanied by humorous vignettes comparing comfort and discomfort between shirt wearers. The sign's slogan - "No More Sore Necks" - captures the transitional moment in men's apparel when comfort innovations became a selling point. A crisp and visually striking survivor of early American fashion advertising.
Garland shirts were made of extra-fine muslin (or madras) with a linen body, cushioned neck band, gathered yoke, sloped shoulders, and patented gusset for a comfortable and flat fit. The sirts were finished off with pearl buttons and 4-ply cuffs.
