Campbell G. Paxton (American, b. 1948) framed polymer clay relief titled “A Centaur Makes a Cameo Appearance,” c. 1990s. Paxton, trained as an art historian, became known for intimate sculptures exploring classical mythology, the human figure and movement. His work ranges from bronze and clay to polymer clay, often playfully reinterpreting ancient gods and mythological figures. This dimensional centaur composition is presented against a dark ground in its original-style stepped frame and is titled and signed on the reverse, with the artist initials in clay on the front upper left hand corner. A distinctive piece for a classical, Grand Tour or dark academia collection.
