it was manufactured in the united states, and the lock and keys were made by eagle lock co., terryville, ct, connecticut.

the remnants of the label on the trunk indicate the highly durable material vulcanized fiber ("hardvul\." "hard vulcanized fibre").

this is an extremely robust, lightweight, cellulose-based composite material that was the standard for manufacturing high-quality travel trunks, shipping boxes, and steamer trunks from the late 19th to the mid-20th century.

due to its construction, it is correspondingly robust, yet lightweight thanks to the material.

combined with the characteristic round metal rivets and reinforced brass or iron corner fittings, this piece of luggage was virtually indestructible for long sea and rail journeys.

the interior is partially lined with velvet and canvas, and the drawers are lined with marbled paper.

in addition to various drawers with ornate metal handles, it also features a hanging system for suits.
