Dimensions: heights 67–71 cm, base diameters 22–23 cm.
A highly decorative set of three tall Japanese shokudai (燭台), traditional candlesticks dating from the Taishō period, crafted from turned wood and fitted with metal candle holders.
Each candlestick rests on a broad circular base and has a long, slender stem with subtle variations in shape and wood tone. Open metal holders at the top were designed to keep a candle stable while partially protecting the flame. Their slight differences show that the three pieces are not mechanically identical, yet together they form a beautifully harmonious ensemble.
In Japan, shokudai were used in Buddhist temples, at domestic altars and during ceremonial or ritual occasions. Together with incense burners and flower vases, candlesticks often formed part of a traditional altar arrangement.
The warm wood has developed an attractive natural patina through age and use. Wear, minor discolouration and traces of candle use give the pieces an authentic appearance and reflect their original purpose.
Today, they form a strongly sculptural group for an entrance hall, living room, gallery or Japanese-inspired interior. Their varying heights allow them to be displayed beautifully together, while the long vertical lines and open metal forms create interesting shadows.
In attractive antique condition, with normal signs of use, patina, discolouration and minor irregularities consistent with age and original function.
