The carved front panels with circular geometric … Read more An extraordinary and rare French Gothic-style chest dating from between 1480 and 1530. The carved front panels with circular geometric rosettes enclosed in pointed arches and stylized leaf elements are the unmistakable signature of French late Gothic. The central panel under the lock features a carved pleated serviette motif, another typical element of this period. The hardware may date to the 17th century, as many of these chests were originally built without hardware or were replaced over the centuries due to wear. Constructed of walnut, this chest was most likely made in central-southern France. Despite its nearly 500-year history, the chest is in excellent condition. It has a wonderful, completely original chocolate-colored patina. See less
